Papers of the Thompson family of Orange County, N.C., mainly Civil War letters of Joseph, David, and John to their mother Eliza, father Solomon, and sister Mary, including letters written from prison and hospitals. Joseph was captain and quartermaster of the 23rd Mississippi Regiment in Tennessee, Missippippi, and Alabama, and a prisoner of war at Johnson's Island, Ohio in 1862. His brother David, 27th North Carolina Regiment, was stationed in eastern North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. Their brother John, 31st North Carolina Regiment, was in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Mississippi. Other papers include correspondence, deeds, and receipts, 1769-1831, of Samuel Thompson (fl. 1781-1826), Orange County farmer, and his family; and letters from Joseph S. Thompson when he was a teacher in Tennessee and Mississippi, 1857-1861.
